# Cooking Measurements

## In recipes, quantities of ingredients may be specified by mass ("weight"), by volume, or by count. This category includes questions related to these terms.

### How many cups are in a gallon?

1 US gallon = 16 US Cups (exact) = 15.14 Metric cups
1 Imperial Gallon = 19.215 US cups = 18.18 Metric cups

I would agree totally on you手机500彩票客户端r US measurement, but in the rest of
the world, a 'cup' is a nebulous amount and I think depends on
which country you手机500彩票客户端 are in.
In UK, a cup is half of an Imperial pint. I cannot find a
'metric cup' defined anywhere with authority, and you手机500彩票客户端r amounts
specified above make it exactly half a litre - (that's a very large
cup). This entire issue is further complicated by the usage of
'liquid'cups and 'dry volume' cups, and the use of ISU or SI
(International System of Units) in some countries instead of
'original'Metric.
A very confusing issue indeed!
1 gal = 16 cups
1 cup = 0.06 gal
1 gallon = 16 cups
1 cup =0.23 gallon

### What is 375 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?

375 degrees Fahrenheit is about 190.56 degrees Celsius.
Temperature is easy to convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius you手机500彩票客户端rself.
You can use the formula Tc = (5/9)*(Tf-32) where Tc = temperature
in degrees Celsius, Tf = temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. 375 F
is 191 C.
375°F = 190.6°C (375°F - 32) multiplied by 5/9 =
190.6°C
375 degree Fahrenheit = 190.5555556 degree Celsius.

### How many ounces are in 1 cup?

In the US, 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces (*not identical to the
avoirdupois ounce which is weight)
In the US, one standard measuring cup contains 8 fluid
ounces, but there is also a dry measure using the term cup,
equal to 8 ounces.
The UK cup is equal to 10 Imperial ounces, which are equal to
0.96 US ounces, because they are based on the avoirdupois (weight)
ounce.
This standard - as with standard spoon measurements - varies
from country to country. As well, ordinary coffee cups can vary
greatly in capacity, so standard measures depending on the country
of origin of a recipe should always be used, rather than those
mismatched cups no longer part of dinner sets, which sit in the
kitchen cupboard.
Fluid ounces are an volume measurement which is not the same as
the weight of an item. Volume measurements are how much of a
container is filled which is totally different to how much an item
weighs. A cup of chopped carrot will weigh more than a cup of
chopped marshmallow.
In many cases some variation in quantities doesn't matter at
all, but - especially in baking - the use of different size cups
for measuring can invite disaster. So use standard measures, and
check the country of origin of the recipe in case ther standard
measures are different.

### How many ounces make a gallon?

In a US gallon... 128 ounces
Both US gallons and "Imperial" (UK) gallons contain 8 pints -
but the US pint is 16 fluid ounces while the Imperial pint is 20
fluid ounces.
So if you手机500彩票客户端're working in Imperial gallons the answer is 160 fluid
ounces.
It's quite a big difference so worth double-checking which units
you手机500彩票客户端're supposed to be using!
To know the weight of a certain volume you手机500彩票客户端 need to know the
specific gravity of the fluid. In other words: the weight of one US
gallon of water is not the same as the weight of one US gallon of
gasoline.
1 gallon [US, liquid] = 128 ounce [US, liquid]
1 Imperial gallon = 160 Imperial fluid ounces
128 fluid ounces = 1 gal I'm happy to help =D

###### Asked in Cooking Measurements, Demographics, Height

### What was the average height of a man 100 years ago?

Average height world wide or in a specific country? Worldwide
the average height today is just below 5'8". It's hard to tell the
overall average 100 years ago but honestly, it wouldn't surprise me
if the average was around 5'5" give or take. In the US, the average
height 100 years ago was about 5'6"-5'7" (that is if counting all
the people in the 20-79 year age group like many studies do,
although now they include 80+ year olds now since our life
expectancy is also increasing) and today is 5'9.5". It is
definitely connected to diet, primarily nutritionally (or
malnutrition in the case of countries like Pakistan), often beef
(high in particular proteins) is cited as being connected to this
change in average heights. In Southeast Asia this average has
increased, today's average in countries like the Philippines is
around 5'4".
** The British Army fed their grenadiers (beefeaters) beef to
help them grow, they presumed, in stature.
Note: stature may play more of a role in other factors which
also affect survivability, which have little to do with diet, (such
as warfare and disease) though diet is the over-riding factor in
the past 100 years.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It should be noted: Grenadiers had to be 6 feet tall, and wore
tall beaverskin hats to appear more intimidating, as they were the
front line troops of the British Army. Beef is high in creatine,
which is an essential ingredient to building strong muscles as
well.

###### Asked in Units of Measure, Cooking Measurements, Weight and Mass

### How many grams are in a tablespoon?

It depends on what you手机500彩票客户端're measuring.
What's the tablespoon holding? Butter or oregano? Sugar or salt?
Molten lead or feathers?
Grams are a unit of mass (or weight) and a tablespoon is a unit
of volume. Therefore it depends entirely on what you手机500彩票客户端 are measuring
-- it depends on the density of the substance. A tablespoon
of lead will be much heavier than a tablespoon of feathers
(although a gram of lead and a gram of feathers weigh exactly the
same!). Similarly, a tablespoon of butter weighs a different number
of grams than a tablespoon of salt.
See the Web Links for a handy automatic conversion
calculator. Just enter the food item, the units you手机500彩票客户端 have, and the
units you手机500彩票客户端 want... and presto!
For instance (for US tablespoon):
1 tablespoon of water weighs 14.79 grams
1 tablespoon of table salt weighs 18.25 grams
1 tablespoon of butter weighs 14.19 grams
1 tablespoon of oil (canola or soy) weighs 13.62
grams
1 tablespoon of sugar (granulated) weighs 12.5 grams
1 tablespoon of sugar (brown) weighs 13.8 grams
(packed)
Some other useful conversions:
16 tablespoons = 1 cup
3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
28.35 grams = 1 dry ounce
1 US tablespoon = 14.7867648 ml

###### Asked in Cooking Measurements

### How many tablespoons make a cup?

16 tablespoons
1 tablespoon is equal to 1/2 ounce. 1 cup is equal to 8 ounces
so the answer is 16 tablespoons.
There 2 Tbsp = 1 fl. oz. 1 cup = 8 fl. oz.
Just mulitply amount of fl.oz. by two, and you手机500彩票客户端 will find the
number of tablespoons. So, 8 x 2 = 16 tablespoons
16.5
i have just weighed 1 real fluid tablespoon and it came to 5/8th
of an ounce, for 1/2 a cup of liquid it took 6 tablespoons to fill
to brim.
therefore 12 tablespoons is 1 cup.
1 cup is 250 gm. -So that is 16.6 tablespoons of any liquid.
